Frequently Asked Questions

Q: I am a dentist. What time commitment must I make? What should I expect?

A: Extraordinary volunteer dentists typically serve a 2-4 hour shift, from once a month, to once a quarter, to once or twice a year. Everything helps! You can make a greater impact if you bring an RDA with you, but it isn’t required, as our Registered Dental Assistants are experts at working with volunteers.

Q: Are Registered Dental Hygienists needed?

A: Absolutely! If you are registered in Tennessee, you may be scheduled to give care to our patients after completing a Volunteer Orientation. Once it is determined you are ready to see patients for us, you may be scheduled a 2-6 hour shift one or more times or may be called to fill in for a scheduled staff or volunteer RDH.

Q: How about Registered Dental Assistants?

A: Assistants who volunteer in our clinic must be registered in Tennessee and have at least 6 months of work experience. If you meet these criteria, you will also complete a Volunteer Orientation. Once you are ready to see patients for us, you may be scheduled a 2-6 hour shift one or more times or may be called to fill in for a scheduled staff or volunteer RDA.

Q: Are there opportunities for nonclinical volunteers?

A: Yes! Please see our Non-Clinical Volunteer Opportunities List for jobs and descriptions. Please note that some positions require specific time commitment for recurring service.

Q: Do you ever organize medical/dental mission trips?

A: If you are looking on this page, we know you care about people! We would be happy to connect you with local dentists who currently serve internationally OR you can find a trip/experience for yourself on http://medicalmissions.org
